Our client – a software development and testing company specialized in medical solutions – is currently looking to strengthen its team with a Software Architect (SCB).
The Software Architect for the SCB Platform is responsible for defining, designing, and guiding the implementation of a secure, scalable, and regulatory-compliant embedded software architecture for SCB integrated medical devices and connected healthcare systems. This role bridges embedded systems, cybersecurity, and medical regulatory standards to ensure safe, reliable, and secure connectivity of Fresenius medical devices throughout their lifecycle.
The Software Architect for the SCB Platform is responsible for defining, designing, and guiding the implementation of a secure, scalable, and regulatory-compliant embedded software architecture for SCB integrated medical devices and connected healthcare systems. This role bridges embedded systems, cybersecurity, and medical regulatory standards to ensure safe, reliable, and secure connectivity of Fresenius medical devices throughout their lifecycle.
Main responsibilities:
Architecture & Design:
- Define and maintain the SCB software architecture, ensuring modularity, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- Design and document SCB software interfaces, communication protocols, and system components across embedded firmware, and connected applications (e.g., Fresenius Cloud, EDGE, Service Software).
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and system engineers to optimize performance, power consumption, and resource utilization.
- Lead architectural reviews and ensure alignment with IEC 62304 and related regulatory requirements in the context of SCB integrated Fresenius medical devices.
- Establish and implement a security architecture in compliance with FDA cybersecurity guidance and IEC 81001-5-1 principles.
- Define secure boot, firmware update, encryption, authentication, and key management strategies for SCB in cooperation with Fresenius Medical device and Enterprise architects.
- Oversee threat modelling, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing processes in collaboration with the security team. Ensure secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC) practices are followed.
- Drive incident response and patch management strategies for SCB field-deployed medical devices.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the SCB software teams.
- Evaluate and select appropriate technologies, RTOS, communication stacks, and development tools.
- Support the implementation of DevOps pipelines and continuous integration/testing frameworks for the SCB Software platform.
- Participate in design reviews, audits, and regulatory submissions (FDA, MDR, ISO 13485).
- Support customer meetings as the technical subject matter experts for specific features and architecture solutions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering / software engineering / computer science or equivalent (master’s preferred)
- 8+ years’ relevant experience in software development for embedded electronic systems, with 3+ years in a software architecture or technical leadership role (mandatory).
- Essential: Proven experience developing embedded software for medical or safety-critical devices.
- Essential: Strong background in real-time operating systems (RTOS), C/C++, and embedded Linux
- Essential: Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, software architecture, and UML design.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001) and secure embedded design practices. Desirable cybersecurity certifications such as CISSP, CEH, or CSSLP.
- Practical experience with TLS communication and TPM knowledge is a plus.
- Experience with wireless communication protocols and cloud connectivity preferred.
- Medical device software or functional safety training (IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 26262, DO-178C) is a plus.
- Comprehensive knowledge of English (speak & write), advanced knowledge in German desirable.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and documentation skills, particularly for cross-disciplinary teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and compliance culture in medical device development.
- Ability to lead by influence and collaborate across hardware, software, quality, and regulatory teams.
- Desirable knowledge of structured problem-solving methods and/or techniques.
